Experimental Type & Handlettering
This project explores the expressive and tactile qualities of typography through two distinct poster designs. The first poster, titled “Stars, Amused, Type,” was inspired by three random words generated from what3words.com, linked to a location within a kitchen. Drawing from this setting, I crafted a custom typeface using strawberry jelly, transforming everyday materials into a playful, textural design. The final composition, developed in Adobe Photoshop and arranged in InDesign, resembles a cinematic movie poster — balancing experimentation with compositional clarity.
The second piece reimagines a 1905 hiring advertisement from the San Francisco Call newspaper, originally seeking a cook for a boarding school or hospital. I hand-sketched the typography using markers on paper, then scanned and refined it digitally in Adobe Illustrator. The design features organic green and purple hues to evoke freshness and health, paired with a hand-drawn authenticity that reflects its early 20th-century inspiration. I also created a custom artist mark, hand-lettered and vectorized in Illustrator, to unify both works under a cohesive visual identity. This project highlights the intersection of analog process, digital refinement, and typographic storytelling.
